Aubrey Lavender is a composer, writer and music producer.

Aubrey has composed music for Tesla, HUNAP (The Harvard University Native American Program), tasteinyourmouth, the London Wildlife Trust and the Kaunas State Puppet Theatre, and released music under his own name and with his band Milton Keynes.

Opera Magazine said his collaboration with composer Abel MGE I’m Cleaning, I’m Cleaning “Struck just the right balance between slapstick and satire, the score a veritable musical sneer”. Jonathan Dove said of his work with MGE "Brilliant... ...It's always exciting when one comes across a composer (and librettist) who can speak theatre."

Aubrey holds degrees from Bennington College, USA (BA Liberal Arts with a concentration in Music Composition) and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, UK (MA in Opera Making and Writing).

Projects

Librettist - The Cloud (2024)

A satirical song cycle with music by Daniel Davis, a contemporary take on the prince and the pauper. A glitch in the police facial recognition software leads to an elderly prince switching places with an equally elderly environmental protester on the eve of his coronation as king.

The piece premiered at the St. Pancaras Clock Tower in london.

Librettist - Horse Person Opera (2024)

An absurdist opera included as part of the Tête à Tête opera festival. Composed by Abel MGE, directed by Sam Redway, choreo by Shea Sullivan.

“Power. Respect. Hooves. Two brothers are fused into one centaur. They will have to work together if they are going to survive this comic sci-fi opera. But can they put their differences aside? Who will hold the reins of power?”.

Librettist/Composer - Karlsson and Mazylis (2023)

A Lithuanian language puppet opera the Kaunas National Puppet Theatre. Based on Astrid Lindgren’s Karlsson series.

Composer - Hysterically Shopping (2023)

An opera co-composed with Aran O’Grady and Abel MGE for tasteinyourmouth, a Dublin based Theatre group.

Composer - Tesla Cyber Rodeo Installation (2022)

An installation of electronic music and sound design created for the opening of Tesla’s gigafactory in Texas. (The second largest factory in the world). The piece was co-composed by Abel MGE and Paul Mortilla.

Dramaturg - Prarie Winters (2022)

A modern dance piece, set to premiere at Resolution Festival at The Place, London. Choreographed and written by dancer Anna Dunlop. The piece was funded by the Canada Council For The Arts.

Librettist - I’m Cleaning, I’m Cleaning(2021)

“I’m Cleaning, I’m Cleaning”, a farcical chamber opera about Nuclear War, with a libretto by Aubrey and music by Abél MGE. The opera ran for four nights in 2021 at the Guildhall School of Music. Opera Magazine said the piece “Struck just the right balance between slapstick and satire, the score a veritable musical sneer”.
